A Bold Turn in Spurn: Remfry’s Portrait Moves from Loan to Permanent Gallery Item
Remfry expressed that it gave him tremendous joy to learn that Two Girls On The Shore has become a lasting part of the gallery’s collection. He described his recent gallery show as a genuine highlight and said he felt deeply grateful for the opportunity to present that body of work to an audience that was highly engaged and generously receptive.
“Having this piece permanently housed in the collection feels profoundly meaningful to me,” he added.
The painting had been on loan at the Beverley Art Gallery since December 2024. The purchase was made possible with support from the local council, the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery, and Art Fund.
According to the Royal Academy of Arts, Remfry is renowned for creating large-scale watercolours of dancers, as well as for his drawings and watercolours featuring neighbors and friends at the Hotel Chelsea in New York, where he lived from 1995 to 2016.
Remfry was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2001.
