This season has leaned heavily into a Cinderella-esque narrative, with Sophie, played by Yerin Ha, captivating Benedict's imagination behind a silver mask before vanishing at midnight. What follows is Benedict's fervent search for this mysterious woman, whose image haunts his art. Yet, when he repeatedly crosses paths with Sophie in her everyday life – even rescuing her and spending significant time with her – he remains remarkably oblivious to her true identity.
For many viewers, this lack of recognition strains credulity. Luke Thompson offers a compelling defense, suggesting that Benedict's struggle isn't just about simple oversight. "I think we need to give Benedict a little bit of grace," he explained. "Because he is flawed. And I think we all have blind spots. You know, everyone will have something that everyone else knows about you but you haven't figured out about yourself. And sometimes it's the thing that's closest to you, that's right in front of you. You can't see it."
But here's where it gets really interesting: Thompson suggests Benedict's issue is more profound. "I think he can't square fantasy and reality. That's the whole problem with his character. He can't join all the dots and put it all together, because that'd be too scary."
